On Facebook, I subscribe or 'like' the page 'Pepsi We Inspire'. Not only do they have motivational quotes, they are constantly sharing articles, links and tips on various things. Yesterday, they featured an article about a group called "BLACK GIRLS RUN!".
About Black Girls Run? In 2009, Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks created Black Girls RUN! in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners. The mission of Black Girls RUN! is to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80% of African-American women are overweight. BGR! wants to create a movement to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.
I thought this was the coolest thing. I mean, it's something motivational. And you know? I got this crazy idea...why not do something like this for our polynesian community? A group for women, focusing on fitness. Focusing on getting fit and healthy. The group mentioned above focuses on running. To be quite honest, I'm not a runner, but I do love working out and promoting good health. Anyhow, just thought this would be fun. I'm thinking maybe even doing a 5K or something as a group. Or getting together with other polynesian instructors and holding an event - maybe a free event - that promotes fitness. What do you think? Do you think this is a good idea? Just throwing the ideas out there. In the meantime, if you want to check out their website, here it is -
