The things we women do for beauty....

I am the oldest of 7 kids and the oldest of 4 girls. Out of all of us girls, I think I was the one cursed with my hair type. My sister Kalo has the pretty curls. Silia has the straight hair and Lani not so straight and not too curly -- just right I guess. Then there is me -- I ended up with the nappy hair. My hair is similar to a black girls hair.

I swore when I was in high school I would never wear my hair pulled back in a bun. That was something only old tongan women do. Guess what? I've been doing that for how many years now?

Due to my hair being that way, I have to chemically straighten it. I use to have it professionally done, but that was not in the price range. Instead, I bought 2 boxes of hair relaxer to do myself. I'm not picky on the brands, so I bought the medium price one.

Last Saturday night, I decided I was going to put some effort into doing my hair and decided to relax my hair. I sectioned it off into four sections and began in the back. How long you leave the hair relaxer in depended on the texture of your hair. I figured since I bought the regular strength I would leave in for the course texture. That meant 20 minutes total.

Probably 15 minutes into it, I could feel the back of my neck burning. I've never felt that before so I decided it was time to rinse it out. This was the first time and I didn't want to chance all of my hair falling out. Finally got all the relaxer out, but was left with chemically burned skin. That means, I have to do my hair and leave it down to cover the burns around my neck. So not cute, but hey, my hair is straight. LOL.

The following day...

Today...

So I don't believe in using relaxers (ever since burning my face in 9th grade), but if you get a good flat iron, it will do the trick. I blogged about my hair faux pas too at this link:
